An LCD TV? Or A Plasma TV?
If you are considering purchasing a new television any time soon you may be confused about the various options available to you. Both Plasma TVs and LCD TVs are popular but which type is the right one for you? Both are slim-line and offer flat screens, high definition and superior picture quality but the technical features differ. So which one should you choose? Below are a few suggestions to help you consider all your options and help you to make up your mind.
Plasma screen TVs generally weigh less than LCD TVs, this is an important consideration if you are wanting to wall mount your TV. Where you are considering putting your new TV is also an important thing to think about. If the TV is for the main living area then it is not so important however if you want to put the TV in the bedroom the lighter Plasma TV will be easy to move upstairs and wall mount. However Plasma TVs have a brighter picture ‘shine’ than LCDs and this can be annoying in areas of dimmer lighting. Plasma’s are usually bigger than 32 inches so space is also an important consideration.
Plasma TV’s are generally thought of having better color accuracy and contrast ratio than LCDs. A better contrast ratio improves the quality of the picture and renders deeper levels of black. The higher grey scale levels on a plasma TV also give a higher quality of color accuracy meaning that white light is not filtered, as with LCD TVs. Color is produced at the light source ensuring color vibrancy and accuracy with a Plasma TV.
The advantages of choosing an LCD TV include the fact that this type of TV will usually have a longer life than a Plasma. Most LCDs can reach 100,000 hours compared to a Plasma’s 60,000 hours. LCD TVs do not get as hot as Plasma TVs and use less power because they do not use phosphors to create images. LCDs also work better at higher altitudes with Plasma’s performing less well when altitude levels are high. LCD TVs also do not succumb to burn-in on static images.
When it comes to choosing between a Plasma TV and an LCD TV you are essentially choosing a competing technology with both offering many similar important features. It is the way the image is delivered that makes the difference and for a non-techie type of person it may just be size, cost and initial reaction to the image quality that is the deciding factor. Other people enjoy mulling over the technical features and these will be the deciding factors for them.
